John Aldridge

john aldridge after dinner speaker

John was born in Liverpool on 18 Sept 1958. He was to go on and play for Newport County, Oxford, Liverpool, Real Sociedad, Tranmere and Rep of Ireland.

John was a prolific goal-scorer all through his career.

He played for Oxford in the 1986 LC Final victory (Oxford’s only honour in history) over QPR.
Despite his fascinating goal-scoring record, it took John more than 20 International appearances before he scored his International goal.

John is now a keen golfer and accomplished after dinner speaker, with many avid memories from a glittering career.

After a highly successful football career, John Aldridge now works extensively in the local and national media and is now in demand as an after dinner speaker. His speech reflects the man and how he played the game - honest, direct and Entertainment.

There are few people who have such a long and distinguished career in football as John Aldridge. Initially rejected by Liverpool FC as a schoolboy, Aldo went into non league football with South Liverpool whilst working as a toolmaker. Len Ashurst watched him play and immediately gave him a professional contract with Newport County. Aldo soon established himself as a regular goalscorer and moved on to Oxford United, then Liverpool, before going abroad to Real Sociadad until finishing his playing career with Tranmere Rovers.

He appeared in 2 World Cup Finals for the Republic of Ireland and is well remembered for the famous touchline incident in USA ’94 when he nearly didn’t get on the pitch as a substitute following an amazing touchline row with a FIFA official.

When he finally hung up his boots Aldo became manager of Tranmere Rovers. He led his team to the Worthington Cup Final, and also saw them achieve the greatest ever FA Cup comeback after being three down to Glenn Hoddle’s Southampton.

Aldo knows all about the FA Cup. He has won it twice as a player and also became the first player to miss a penalty in an FA Cup Final!
