John Hartson
John Hartson had a glittering career which started as a teenager at Luton Town, then going onto play for Arsenal, West Ham, Wimbledon, Coventry City, Celtic, WBA & Norwich City. Swansea born John was Capped 51 times for Wales and was a big, strong, old-fashioned type of target man who had the knack of scoring important goals.
After just 54 appearances for Luton Town, in January 1995 he joined Arsenal for a fee £2.5 million, a British record transfer fee for a teenage player at the time! Another big money move then saw him join West Ham in February 1997, he had an amazing impact and his goals helped secure Premier League status for the Hammers. After 33 goals in 73 League and Cup appearances for the East London club, he was signed by Wimbledon for a record £7.5 million.
Following a short spell at Coventry City, in August 2001 he joined Celtic in a £6m transfer. He shared the Scottish PFA Players’ Player of the Year award in 2005, and was also voted the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year. John scored over 100 goals for Celtic, including the winning goal against Hearts on his 31st Birthday in 2006 to clinch the title.
In 2009, at only 34 years of age, John’s life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer which then spread to his lungs and brain. Months of intensive treatment followed and John has made a remarkable recovery, a huge testament to his strength of character.
