Ron Atkinson
Commonly known as ‘Big Ron’, Ron Atkinson is an English footballing legend. Spending his entire playing career at Oxford United, Ron went on to manage some of the largest football clubs in the country before turning his attention to punditry and guest appearances. A wonderful football speaker, Ron talks of both his playing and managerial career, with insights into the sport not often caught by the cameras.
Ron transferred to Oxford United in 1959 on a free transfer. Playing alongside his brother, Ron went on to make over 500 apperacnes for the club, a record that still stands to this day. Nicknamed ‘The Tank’, Ron is the only player to have ever captained a club from the Southern Leaguer through three divisions of the football league. As a sports speaker, Ron discusses the attributes needed in a sportsman in order for them to achieve goals and maximise success at any opportunity.
After retirement from his playing career, Ron began a profession as a football manager at Kettering Town. Aged only 32, Ron went on to win the fourth division for the side in 1977 before leaving them on the brink of promotion to the second division to move to West Bromwich Albion. Getting his big break after his spell at West Brom, Ron took over as Manchester United manager and won the FA Cup in both 1983 and 1985. Situated at the helm of a number of leading clubs, including Atletico Madrid, Ron is one of the best football speakers to talk about some of the biggest games of the period as well as his encounters with giants of the sport at the time.
With his last managerial job at Nottingham Forest during the 1988-1989 season, Ron retired from football managing and joined ITV as a leading pundit and analyst. Becoming a stalwart figure in commentary for football in the 1990s with a lovable personality and very own language, that many describe as ‘Ronglish’.
