Scott Quinell
Welsh Rugby Speaker Scott Quinel Born on the 20th of August 1972, son of Derek Quinnell Legend of rugby union, married to Madora John sister of Barry John (The King), godfather Merv the Swerve, Scott was under no pressure of course to play rugby!!!
Scott started playing rugby for Llanelli Juniors at 8 years old, he had his first game for the Llanelli Scarlets at 18 years of age against Penygroes RFC in 1990. Scott went on to play 146 games for the Scarlets scoring 69 tries for his beloved home club, this was under the guidance of Gareth Jenkins his only Llanelli coach and mentored also by his father Derek.
Scott got married in 1992 to Nicola and within a year had their first born child Samantha, the family moved to Wigan for Scott to pursue his career playing rugby league in 1994. During this time Scott scored 22 tries for Wigan and also played for the Welsh Rugby League.
The family stayed in Wigan until 1996 and then moved down to surrey where Scott returned to Union after the code went professional. Scott and Nicola then had their second child Lucy. Scott played for Richmond alongside his brother Craig and several other Welsh giants Alan Bateman, Andy Moore and Barry Williams. During this time Scott scored 36 tries for Richmond RFC but was clearly unhappy playing for the club. So in 1996 this took a toll on the happiness of the family and Nicola now expecting their 3rd child they decided to return to Llanelli mid contract with Richmond. John Kingston the coach was extremely understanding and left the family return to their home town, Scott took half of his wages in pursuit of some hwyl again in his rugby playing.
Scott returned to his beloved Scarlets and a month later Steele the last child was born. Scott was very happy to be home again and began to feel the magic again in his precious Scarlets jersey, no money in the world could buy that kind of passion, Scott enjoyed finishing off his playing days unfortunately prematurely due to injury in his wrist and knees. Scott eventually coached the under 21 and the Llanelli RFC squad taking some serious silver wear home for the club. Scott felt proud to give something back to the club he loves so much and will always help them out if they need him.
Scott played for Wales 52 times and scored 12 tries, Scott loved playing under Graham Henry's reign and still calls him coach to this day as a mark of respect. Scott also played for the Barabarians and went on two British Lion tours in 1997 and 2001 he scored 5 tries and 1 test try.
Scott currently works in the media, he occasionally works for Sky Sports, Real Radio, The One Show, A Question of Sport, Soccer am and has just finished making the series of School of Hard Knocks.
